In a move aimed at preserving sanctity of the region, the Sissu panchayat in the tribal Lahaul and Spiti district has imposed a temporary ban on all tourism activities from yesterday till February 28. This ban covers the popular Sissu helipad, which will remain off limits to tourists during this period to ensure a peaceful and disturbance-free environment for local religious ceremonies.

The decision was made following a meeting attended by representatives from the Sissu gram panchayat, Deity Raja Ghepan Committee, Devi Bhoti Committee, Labrang Gompa Committee and various women and youth welfare committees. The ban was implemented to protect the community's cultural and spiritual practices during this sacred time, which holds significant importance for the locals.

Panchayat pradhan Rajiv explained that the unanimous decision was necessary to avoid conflicts arising from the influx of tourists. The communities expressed concern that the Sissu helipad’s use could create noise disruptions that might interfere with worship and rituals associated with local deities. “The period from January 16 to February 28 is particularly sacred to us and we are working to maintain the serenity of the valley during this time,” he added.
