SJVN workers demand release of gratuity
Hundreds of contract workers employed at the 1500 MW, 412 MW and 210 MW hydroelectric projects of SJVN staged a protest at the company’s headquarters, demanding the release of gratuity, insurance coverage and regularisation of employment based on the nature of their work.
Addressing the gathering, union leaders highlighted that SJVN was recently awarded “Navratna” status by the Department of Public Enterprises, making it India’s 25th Navratna company. They credited the company’s 36 years of progress, since its establishment in 1988, to the hard work and dedication of its workers.
In the financial year 2023–24, SJVN recorded a net profit of Rs 908.40 crore and generated 8,489 million units (MU) of electricity, mostly from hydro power. Despite this success, union leaders alleged that workers are denied even statutory minimum wages.
Quoting the Minimum Wages Act of 1948, protesters stated that they perform skilled tasks but are paid as semi-skilled workers. They emphasized that withholding gratuity violates labor rights and undermines the constitutional right to livelihood. “Gratuity is a legally mandated benefit to support workers during retirement, disability, or in case of death,” said a leader.
The workers also alleged harassment by SJVN management toward those raising concerns. They warned that if their demands are not met, they would halt operations at hydro project sites indefinitely.
