Heavy snowfall and rain have disrupted life in the Trans-Giri region of Sirmaur district, leaving dozens of villages cut off from the district headquarters, Nahan, for the second consecutive day. The higher reaches of Churdhar, Haripurdhar, and Nohradhar received significant snowfall, with Churdhar peak getting up to one foot of fresh snow. Following the snowfall, the maximum temperature in Haripurdhar on Tuesday was recorded at 8°C, while the minimum temperature plummeted to -2°C, adding to the region’s woes.

Roads blocked, connectivity severed

The accumulation of snow, particularly in areas such as Bariyalta, Doom Ka Bagh, and Lajwa, caused significant disruptions. The Haripurdhar-Nahan road has remained blocked since Monday afternoon, severing connectivity to several panchayats. Similarly, the Haripurdhar-Kupvi road has been inaccessible for two days due to heavy snow. Traffic on the Solan-Ronhat-Minus road was also disrupted on Monday evening, although it was partially restored by Tuesday afternoon.

Additionally, several smaller roads, including the Dalyanu-Nainidhar route, Haripurdhar-Gehal road, and the Bagh link road, remain closed, leaving residents stranded.

Travel a challenge

Residents are facing significant challenges, with many forced to travel 10 to 15 kilometres on foot through the snow to meet basic needs. The district authorities are working to clear the roads, but the persistent sub-zero temperatures and difficult terrain have slowed operations.

Calls for better preparedness

Residents have expressed frustration over the delays and called for improved preparedness to handle such weather conditions. The snow has highlighted the need for better infrastructure and emergency response systems in the region.

Efforts on to clear roads

Efforts are underway to clear the roads and restore connectivity to the affected areas. However, the challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain are making it a slow process.
