Snow fest kicks off in Kevang village
The Snow festival in Chandra Valley officially commenced from Kevang village under the Gondhla Panchayat in the Lahaul-Spiti district today. The event, themed “Yati Utsav” this year, has become a major attraction for tourists. The festival was inaugurated by Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar, who graced the occasion as the chief guest.
In his address, DC Rahul Kumar emphasised the administration’s continued efforts to preserve and promote the district’s rich culture, traditions, rituals, and religious festivals. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to enhancing sustainable tourism and ensuring the district’s recognition on the global tourism map.
The DC stressed that one of the key objectives of the Snow Festival is to preserve Lahaul-Spiti’s cultural heritage and to raise awareness about traditional values among future generations. He also mentioned that the festival plays a significant role in strengthening the tourism business in the region.
“Through this festival, we aim to protect the arts, culture and traditions while fostering pride in the local heritage,” said the DC. He added that the festival is instrumental in promoting the district’s local products and delicacies, providing a platform to showcase them to a wider audience.
The DC also highlighted that the festival will continue for the next month and will feature various activities across the region. He encouraged locals and tourists alike to actively participate in the upcoming events.
During the festival, local women’s groups presented vibrant cultural performances, dressed in traditional attire, which captivated both local residents and visitors. The performances not only entertained but also showcased the rich traditions of the region.
In addition to cultural programmes, various departmental exhibitions were held, providing information about state and central government welfare schemes. The festival also featured sporting events, giving visitors a chance to engage in outdoor activities. Local women’s groups set up stalls selling delicious local cuisine and handmade products, which were well-received by festival-goers.
The event also saw the participation of local leaders and officials. Keylong SDM Rajneesh Sharma along with departmental officials and local residents warmly welcomed the chief guest by adorning him with a traditional cap and ‘Khatak’ (a ceremonial scarf).
Local Panchayat Pradhan Suraj Lal expressed gratitude to the state government, local MLA, and the district administration for launching the Snow Festival from the Gondhla Panchayat.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Panchayat Samiti President Vipin Shashni, District Council Member Dorje Large, Forest Range Officer Aniket Wanve, along with other officials and a large number of local residents. The Snow festival in Lahaul-Spiti is not only a celebration of the region’s traditions but also a platform for promoting local tourism, culture and sustainable business practices.
