Snowfall in Lahaul and Spiti, advisory issued for public safety
A fresh spell of snowfall began in Lahaul and Spiti district today evening, prompting local authorities to issue a travel advisory due to potential risks on the region's roads. The snowfall, which has been observed in areas like the Atal Tunnel, Sissu on the Manali-Leh highway and Tindi in the Sansari-Killar-Thirot-Tandi road area has made travel in these regions hazardous.
The Lahaul and Spiti District Police have urged the public, especially tourists, to avoid unnecessary travel in the district until the weather conditions improve. The Superintendent of Police Lahaul and Spiti, Mayank Chaudhary, mentioned about the slippery road conditions, which have heightened the risk of accidents. He further advised that the current weather conditions could severely affect vehicle movement, especially on the winding mountain roads prone to heavy snowfall.
As snow continues to blanket the region, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and working to ensure public safety. Travellers have been warned to exercise caution if they must move through the area. In addition, the district police have called for vigil around the Atal Tunnel area and nearby routes where the snow has accumulated, creating dangerous driving conditions.
Local authorities have advised travellers to stay updated with the latest weather reports and check road conditions before venturing out. Officials are working to clear the roads and ensure safety for both residents and visitors.
"For now, those planning to travel in the region are advised to postpone their journey until further order," the SP said.
