Solan’s Koti branch post master arrested for embezzling funds

The Kunihar police arrested Monu Kumar, a resident of Vikasnagar tehsil in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, on Tuesday evening from his native village for embezzling Rs 52,392 and official documents from Koti post office in Solan district while serving as its branch post master.

SP Solan Gaurav Singh informed that on August 29, Amit Kumar, Inspector, Postal Department, Subathu subdivision, lodged a report at police station Kunihar that on June 22, Monu was transferred from the main post office in Hamirpur to Koti as a branch post master.

On July 30, assistant branch post master in Koti informed him that since July 27, Monu was missing from the office along with cash of Rs 52,392, office equipment and key official documents. He also contacted him on his mobile phone but it was switched off. Monu failed to be traced following which a case was registered at Kunihar police station under Section 316 (5) of the Bharatiya Nayaya Sanhita for criminal breach of trust.

During investigation, on September 10, Monu (29) was  arrested by the Kunihar police.

While the police was probing the case, official seal of post office, a mobile phone and office order book have been recovered from his possession. The previous criminal record of the accused is also being probed.

Monu was produced before a court on Wednesday for seeking his remand.
