From the snow-laden peaks of Kargil to the rugged terrains of covert operations, Himachal Pradesh continues to prove why it is hailed as the “land of the brave”. Adding a fresh chapter to this illustrious legacy, a soldier from the remote village of Bambal in the Shillai Assembly constituency of Sirmaur district has brought pride to the state.

Amit Thakur, a valiant soldier of Punjab Regiment in the Indian Army, has been awarded the prestigious Chief of the Army Staff’s (COAS) Commendation Card for his exemplary courage during ‘Operation Sindoor’.

Displaying remarkable precision and boldness, Amit launched a rocket at a target 300 metres away, destroying the enemy post with a pinpoint accuracy.

The commendation, personally conferred by General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of the Army Staff, is among the highest recognitions a soldier can receive for exceptional gallantry and service to the nation.

Amit Thakur’s act of heroism is not an isolated tale in his family. Three brothers from the family, including Amit, are serving in the Army. Their sister, Vijay Lakshmi, is in the police force and uncle Shyam Singh Chauhan is an Army veteran.

After joining the Army in 2012, Amit has dedicated over a decade to safeguarding the country’s frontiers. His fearlessness during ‘Operation Sindoor’ not only neutralised a serious threat, but also ignited a wave of pride across the Shillai region and the state.

Residents of Bambal village and surrounding areas have expressed immense admiration for Amit’s courage. His name is now being spoken with the same reverence reserved for the state’s celebrated war heroes. Community leaders and youth organisations are planning to honour him on Independence Day.
