Shocked over the alleged sorry state of affairs at gausadans, where stray animals are kept in Kangra district, NGO Kranti has written to former MP and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi and the Deputy Commissioner, seeking their intervention in the matter.

The NGO, which works for animal welfare, has released videos highlighting the poor conditions in which the stray cows are being kept in a gausadan in Kangra. A video purportedly showing a dead cow lying in the gausadan with birds picking on its carcass has left Kangra residents shocked.

Deeraj Mahajan from NGO Kranti told the Tribune that he visited the gausadan yesterday after receiving complaints from people that the stray cows were being kept there under poor conditions. “A dead cow was lying in the gausadan with birds feeding on it. The people in the nearby areas complained that stray cows kept there are fed once every alternative day. The cows are dying a slow death in gausadan,” he said.

The NGO has complained to Deputy Commissioner Hemraj Bhairwa regarding the sorry state of affairs at the gausadan, besides writing to Maneka Gandhi.

Inquiries revealed that most gausadans are facing shortage of resources for the upkeep of stray animals, mostly cows.

Recently, the Dharamsala MC that had been maintaining a gausadan had proposed that the facility should be taken over by the Animal Husbandry Department for a proper upkeep.
