In a moment of pride for his alma mater and hometown, Vice Admiral Ankur Sharma assumed charge as Director General Naval Projects, Mumbai, on December 1, marking a significant milestone in a naval career spanning over three-and-a-half decades.
An alumnus of St Edward’s School, Shimla, and Naval College of Engineering, Vice Admiral Sharma joined the Navy in 1989. Over his distinguished career, he has traversed a wide spectrum of assignments — from frontline warships to design bureaus, naval dockyards and advanced research establishments. Before his current appointment, he served as Director General of the Weapons and Electronics Systems Engineering Establishment and later as Admiral Superintendent of Naval Dockyard, Mumbai.
Known for his deep technical acumen and forward-looking vision, Vice Admiral Sharma has championed the integration of cutting-edge commercial technologies, including Big Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence, into maritime systems and naval infrastructure.
His service has been recognised with the Nausena Medal, among other honours. He did his matriculation from St Edward’s in 1984. “It’s a matter of great honour and pride for St Edward’s to see our students reach such high positions,” said a teacher from the school.
