In a statement issued here today, the BJP has condemned the decision of the Cabinet to reorganise the panchayats. BJP Panchayati Raj Cell state convenor Vinod Thakur said the Himachal Government’s decision to reorganise the panchayats at a state-level Cabinet meeting clearly indicates that the government is trying to avoid the upcoming elections. He alleged that this decision exposes the government’s fear of defeat and makes clear its intention to postpone the elections.

Thakur said the conflicting stand of the state government had resulted in a Constitutional crisis. “The PRI elections must be held on time before January. Today’s Cabinet decision clearly shows that the Congress regime is not in a mood to hold the polls on time,” he said. He further said that this is a matter of concern for the democratic system as the state, instead of following Constitutional norms, was keen to defer polls on flimsy grounds.
