Survey work for Bilaspur-Leh railway line reaches Kullu

The ambitious and strategically important Bilaspur-Leh railway line has taken a significant leap forward, with the survey reaching Kahudhar in the Bhuntar subdivision of Kullu district. Marking this milestone, a ‘burgi’ (survey marker) for the central line has been installed at Kahudhar, symbolising the advancing progress of this transformative project. The railway line, designed to serve as a lifeline for development and connectivity to the remote border areas of Ladakh, is set to traverse some of India’s most challenging terrains and high-altitude regions.

Recently, survey activities were carried out in various parts of the neighbouring Mandi district. Spanning approximately 489 kilometres, the Bilaspur-Leh railway line will establish connectivity between Bhanupli in Punjab, Bilaspur town in Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The first phase of this grand project, the Bhanupali-Bilaspur railway line, is already under construction and progressing at a commendable pace with completion expected by 2027.

The survey conducted at Kahudhar is a pivotal step in the project’s journey, involving meticulous assessments of terrain, alignment and feasibility for laying railway tracks in this region. Teams of engineers and technical experts are analysing geological and environmental conditions with precision, ensuring that every aspect is well-planned for the successful execution of this monumental venture.

The railway line, once operational, will serve as a strategic asset, bolstering military logistics, enhancing transportation for remote regions and facilitating growth in tourism and economic activity. The project is a testament to India’s resolve to enhance connectivity in regions that were once considered inaccessible.

Building this, railway line poses a unique set of challenges, requiring the construction of numerous tunnels, intricate bridges and high-altitude stations to navigate the steep terrains and extreme climatic conditions.

While the project is hailed as a beacon of progress, it has elicited mixed reactions from the local communities in Kullu. On one hand, residents are optimistic about improved connectivity and the economic benefits it may bring, concerns have surfaced regarding land acquisition and potential environmental disruptions. Authorities are taking steps to address these issues, focusing on transparent communication, fair compensation and measures to mitigate ecological impact.
