Sustain fight against drugs through community efforts: Governor
Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla today flagged off an anti-drug awareness rally at Mehla in Chamba district, urging the public to embrace drug-free living as a means to preserve the region's rich heritage.
Addressing a gathering at the Kisan Mela and Drug De-addiction Awareness Camp held here, the Governor asserted that the foundation of cultural preservation lies in staying free from the grip of narcotics. “We can preserve our culture only if we stay drug-free. Ending the demand is the key to ending the supply,” he remarked.
The event, a joint initiative by Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chamba, witnessed enthusiastic participation from hundreds of school students, who raised slogans against drug abuse, carrying forward a strong social message through their rally.
Calling for a united front, the Governor emphasised that the fight against addiction must begin at home and sustained through collective community efforts. He commended the university and district administration for organising the awareness drive and reiterated that the drug problem undermines not only individual lives but also the nation’s future.
In his address, Governor Shukla highlighted that drug addiction transcends personal suffering and has become a profound societal threat. He pointed to the increasing prevalence of drug use in the state, noting a 340 per cent surge in NDPS cases over the past decade. What was once considered a problem in the neighbouring regions, he said, has now reached the doorsteps of Himachali households, particularly through the infiltration of synthetic drugs like ‘chitta’. The Governor stressed that the youth, with their energy and determination, have the power to lead the battle against this growing menace.
Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, he informed that a state-wide drug-free campaign has been initiated in Himachal Pradesh and urged citizens to support it wholeheartedly.
Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Mahajan praised the initiative, calling it a significant step in the national interest. He underscored the role of parents and the need for timely treatment for those grappling with addiction. MLA from Chamba, Neeraj Nayar, emphasised the importance of strong parenting and vigilant communities. He also informed the public that the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly has passed stringent laws to curb drug trafficking.
MLA from Bharmaur, Dr Janak Raj, brought scientific insights to the discourse, explaining the detrimental effects of drug use on the human mind and body and calling for greater public awareness.
Earlier, Vice-Chancellor of Dr YS Parmar University, Prof Rajeshwar Singh Chandel, highlighted the urgency of addressing drug addiction, which has now become a household concern.
The event was attended by CP Verma, secretary to the Governor, Mukesh Repaswal, Deputy Commissioner of Chamba, and Abhishek Yadav, Superintendent of Police, among others.
