‘Swachh Shahar-Samridh Shahar’ launched to keep Dharamsala clean
The Dharamsala Municipal Corporation (DMC) has launched a 60-day cleanliness campaign, ‘Swachh Shahar-Samridh Shahar’, to ensure proper garbage collection and disposal. Deputy Commissioner Kangra, Hemraj Bairwa, inaugurated the initiative, emphasising that cleanliness is a shared responsibility between citizens and the Municipal Corporation.
With the theme ‘My garbage is my responsibility’, the campaign aims to strengthen the door-to-door waste collection system. ‘Swachhata Mitras’ and municipal officials will educate residents on segregating wet and dry waste at the source. To enhance public participation, the DMC is collaborating with NGOs, self-help groups, hoteliers and business associations.
Samadhan camps will be set up in all city wards, allowing councillors and officials to address public concerns on the spot. The Deputy Commissioner urged commercial establishments to actively support the initiative, highlighting Dharamshala’s status as a globally recognised tourist destination. Keeping the city clean is vital to attracting more visitors and boosting tourism.
During the launch event, DMC Commissioner Zafar Iqbal provided insights into the campaign. The program was attended by Mayor Neenu Sharma, Deputy Mayor Tejinder Kaur, Joint Director Surendra Katoch, ward councillors, Swachhata Mitras and representatives from the business community.
