The sweepers union at a meeting held in Kangra today urged the government to pay them higher wages, as even Prime Minister Narendra Modi had termed them as Covid warriors.

The sweepers risked their lives while keeping cities clean even during the Covid pandemic.

However, most of them in the urban bodies of the state were hired on a contractual basis and paid just minimum wages. In case, they lose their life, their families were not entitled to any benefits, the union said.

It said that the government should pay them higher wages and ensure life insurance of the sweepers engaged by the urban bodies.
