Tax collection up despite economic slump: CM

Despite recession, the state government has succeeded in ensuring an increase of 17.2 per cent in the overall tax collection till November 30.

“Against the collection of Rs 2,727 crore till November, 2018, this year, the collection till November 2019 was Rs 3,198 crore, which shows an increase of Rs 471 crore,” said Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.

In terms of revenue, Shimla and Baddi have emerged the best performing districts, showing an increase of Rs 85 crore and Rs 111 crore, respectively.

He said excise revenue till November 30, 2019, had showed an increase of 11 per cent vis-a-vis corresponding period during the last financial year.

Against the collection of Rs 956 crore last year till November 30, this year, the collection was Rs 1,060 crore, an increase of Rs 104 crore, he added.

The Chief Minister said the GST revenue till November 30, 2019, showed an increase of 24 per cent as compared to the last year. He said against the collection of Rs 1859.07 crore during the last year till November 30, this year, the collection was Rs 2315.63 crore.

The state government had taken several steps to increase the revenue and tax collection in the state. Tax revenue collection was being reviewed regularly, he stated.

Efforts were being made to increase the online registration of GST subscribers under the GSTR-3B to 95 per cent.

The results for November were also encouraging as the overall revenue collection increased by 40 per cent, GST by 33 per cent and excise revenue by 13 per cent.

The Chief Minister said to enforce in letter and spirit the “destination principle” of the GST, he had spoken to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The state government had also taken up the matter with the Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh to rationalise their taxes and levies on liquor so that the same were not prejudicial to Himachal.

The state government was also ensuring effective enforcement of the GST in tourism, construction and hydro-electric projects, besides taking steps to realise the arrears of defaulting excise, toll and other contractors to add revenue to the state exchequer.
