The District Food and Civil Supplies Department has recovered a sum of Rs 1.16 lakh from consumers of the public distribution system, who had Below Poverty Level (BPL) ration cards, but were income tax payees in Una district.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Dr Amit Kumar, who presided over a meeting of the district level vigilance committee, said in an official press release that 1,464 inspections were conducted from June to November. He said irregularities were found in 131 cases, of which action was initiated against 47, while the remaining 84 have been issued stern warnings.
The ADC said a sum of Rs 1.16 lakhs has been recovered from the 47 BPL defaulters, who had taken essential items under the PDS at BPL rates, though they were not entitled for it. He said managements of the fair price shops were also fined Rs 48,000, adding that shopkeepers possessing polythene bags were also fined Rs 9.500.
