Tourism in Kullu-Manali slows down after New Year surge
After the surge in tourist influx during New Year celebrations, a significant decrease in tourist arrivals has been observed in the popular hill station of Kullu-Manali. According to local hoteliers, the room occupancy in Manali hotels, which soared above 80 per cent during the New Year period, has now plummeted to approximately 40 per cent.
Anup Thakur, the president of the Kullu-Manali Paryatan Vikas Mandal, said the tourism sector experienced a surge in visitors during the Christmas and New Year period. However, since the celebrations have concluded, there has been a noticeable dip in the number of tourists arriving from various states, indicating a lean phase for the local hospitality industry. He emphasised that the cause of the sudden decline in tourist influx remains unclear, but assured that the tourism sector remains hopeful for a revival in the coming weeks.
Despite the downturn in numbers, hoteliers remain optimistic. They believe that ample snowfall around Manali presents an ideal opportunity for winter sports and recreational activities, which could draw tourists back to the region. "We urge travellers to plan their trips to Manali now, as this is the perfect time to enjoy the snow and the pleasant weather," Thakur added.
While the number of vehicles arriving in Manali has decreased from over 2,000 per day during the holiday period to around 1,500-1,600 post-New Year. The town continues to buzz with activity as visitors flock to popular spots like Hidimba Temple, Solang valley and the North Portal of the Atal Tunnel. In the Solang valley, tourists are enjoying skiing and paragliding, further fuelling optimism among local businesses.
Business owners in the area, such as Chuni Lal and Chaman, said the snowfall has boosted the winter sports scene in the Solang valley, attracting adventure enthusiasts. With more snowfall expected in the coming days, they are confident that tourist numbers will increase again.
Gajender Thakur, chief patron of Manali Hoteliers Association, said while there has been a dip in tourist arrivals post-New Year, the atmosphere remains lively.
He expressed hope that the winter season in Manali would see a strong recovery as more visitors take advantage of the region's natural beauty and winter sports offerings.
