Tourist dies of high-altitude sickness in Lahaul-Spiti dist
A tragic incident occurred yesterday on the Manali–Leh national highway, where a tourist lost his life due to sudden respiratory distress linked to high-altitude sickness. The incident took place at Darcha in the Lahaul-Spiti district. Despite attempts to rush him to the Keylong hospital for treatment, he passed away en route.
The deceased, identified as Varinderjit Pandher (54) from Patiala, Punjab, was on a trip to Himachal Pradesh with his wife and daughter. While returning from Leh, the family stopped at Sarchu on Sunday, where Pandher began experiencing health complications. Upon reaching Darcha, he received first aid and was referred to Keylong for advanced treatment. Unfortunately, he succumbed before reaching the hospital.
Lahaul and Spiti Superintendent of Police Ilma Afroz stressed the dangers of travelling in high-altitude areas, where oxygen levels are significantly reduced. “Individuals, particularly those with pre-existing respiratory issues, may experience severe breathing problems beyond Darcha or from Gramphu to Losar. Without immediate medical care, this condition can be fatal,” she said, adding that similar incidents have happened in the past.
Afroz also pointed out the lack of mobile network coverage in these remote regions, which complicates emergency response efforts. Authorities have issued an advisory asking travellers with respiratory problems to avoid venturing beyond Darcha. Tourists are encouraged to carry oxygen cylinders, oxygen tablets and essential first aid kits. Staying hydrated by sipping water regularly is also recommended.
Acclimatisation is crucial when visiting high-altitude destinations. Rapid elevation gain can cause breathing difficulties, headaches and nausea. Travellers should ascend gradually, rest frequently and avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine, as these lead to dehydration. With proper preparation, the risk of altitude sickness can be significantly reduced.
