A tourist from Rajasthan was drowned after he fell into the Chandra river while trying to take a selfie near Fumman Nala in Lahaul and Spiti district.
According to the police, the man lost balance and fell into the river. Upon receiving information, a police team from the Kokasar check post rushed to the place but the missing person could not be located due to darkness despite an extensive search operation till late evening.
Lahaul and Spiti SP Mayank Chaudhary said that a joint team led by DSP Raj Kumar was formed today to continue the search. The team consisted of the district police Quick Response Team (QRT), Atal Tunnel police, NDRF, local rescue teams, and teams from Sissu, Manali Mountaineering institute, rafting team and firefighters. The search operation commenced in - 13°C at 8 am.
The SP said, “After hours of search, the body of the missing tourist, identified as Nikhil Kumar Vothra (28) from Jain Nyoti Nohras Gali at Badmer in Rajasthan was found around 10.30 am. The body was located around 500 metres from the incident site. The district authorities have initiated legal proceedings and the body was sent for a post-mortem at the District Hospital, Keylong, before it was handed over to the bereaved family.”
Lahaul and Spiti Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar expressed condolences to the bereaved family over the tragic incident. He urged visitors to avoid going close to riverbanks to avoid fatal incidents.
