Under the ‘All India coordinated research project on mushrooms’, the Department of Plant Pathology of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, organised a five-day training on mushroom cultivation. As many as 20 participants from Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Lahaul and Spiti and Chamba districts underwent training.

Farmers were apprised about various aspects like setting up a mushroom unit, cultivation technology of button mushroom, oyster mushroom, shiitake mushroom, lion’’s mane mushroom and Ganoderma mushroom, along with disease, pest management and marketing. The farmers were provided hands-on training on compost preparation, substrate preparation, spawning, oyster and shiitake bag filling, and pickle preparation. Various experts from the university and other institutions such as the Directorate of Mushroom Research (DMR), Solan, delivered lectures during the programme. The participants were also taken for an exposure visit to the DMR.

During the valedictory session, Dr Dharmesh Gupta, coordinator of the training programme, briefed the participants about the importance and scope of the training programme. Dr Satish Sharma, HOD, Department of Plant Pathology, talked about the importance of various kinds of mushrooms.
