In popular culture, prisons are often depicted as places of hostility, conflict, and idleness. However, breaking away from these stereotypes, Nahan’s Modern Central Jail in Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh is making commendable efforts to rehabilitate inmates and reintegrate them into mainstream society.

Taking a progressive approach, the jail administration has introduced new vocational programs where inmates will now offer haircuts, shaves, and other salon services to the public, alongside the already successful car washing services.

Located in one of Himachal Pradesh’s oldest prison facilities, Nahan Modern Central Jail currently houses around 450 inmates. The authorities have taken significant steps toward ensuring that these prisoners engage in productive activities that not only improve their skills but also provide them with a source of income.

The car washing facility, which was inaugurated two years ago, has already turned into a profitable venture, surpassing the monthly revenue target of Rs 1 lakh. On an average, more than 50 vehicles arrive at the facility for washing every day. With motorcycle washes priced at Rs 100 and car washes at Rs 200, prisoners working at the facility earn around Rs 4,000 per month, which helps them financially support their families while serving their sentence.

Building on the success of the car washing service, the jail administration is now setting up barber and laundry services in the same premises, outside the prison walls but within the jail complex. This expansion aims to provide affordable grooming services such as haircuts, shaves, facials and some other salon services to the public while simultaneously equipping prisoners with valuable skills for life beyond incarceration.

Nahan’s Modern Central Jail Superintendent Bhanu Prakash Sharma emphasised that Nahan Jail operates as an open prison, which means that inmates with good behaviour records are given opportunities to work outside prison walls. Apart from car washing, prisoners here are engaged in various other activities such as growing vegetables, baking, masonry, and selling jail-produced goods in the local market. To ensure quality and efficiency, inmates receive proper vocational training before they start working.

While the rates for the new services are yet to be finalised, initial discussions suggest that haircuts and shaves will be priced between Rs 40 and Rs 50, making them far more affordable than existing city barber shops, where similar services range from Rs 120 to Rs 150. Similarly, laundry services will also be priced reasonably to attract customers. The idea is to offer people a convenient one-stop solution where they can get their vehicles washed while simultaneously availing grooming and laundry services. On weekends and holidays, the facility will be particularly beneficial for residents, as they can get multiple chores done in one place.

This initiative not only benefits prisoners by reducing their psychological stress and keeping them occupied in productive work but also prepares them for reintegration into society once they complete their sentences. By acquiring practical skills, inmates are more likely to find employment post-release, reducing the chances of them reoffending.

Moreover, the jail’s affordable services will also bring financial relief to the local community, particularly in contrast to inflated prices for grooming services in city salons. During the COVID-19 pandemic, prices for haircuts and shaves were regulated by the administration due to added safety measures, such as sanitization, masks, and protective aprons. However, even after these safety protocols were discontinued, many salons continued charging higher rates. The jail’s new barbering facility will now offer an economical alternative to residents.

Superintendent Bhanu Prakash Sharma stated that the initiative aligns with the broader vision of prison reform. By keeping inmates engaged in skill-based work, the prison administration not only enhances their employability but also ensures that they contribute meaningfully to society. The upcoming workshop near the car washing centre will soon house vehicle denting, painting, and additional services, further expanding opportunities for inmates.

Nahan’s Modern Central Jail serves as a shining example of prison reform, demonstrating how correctional facilities can transform lives through education, vocational training, and structured employment.

If successfully implemented, these new initiatives will not only help inmates sustain themselves financially but will also provide locals with affordable, high-quality services. This innovative model could inspire other correctional facilities across the country to adopt similar strategies, turning prisons into centres of rehabilitation, reform, and reintegration.
