Tribute to a scientific luminary: Mandi remembers Dr Lalit Malhotra

A special memorial seminar titled “Personality and contributions of Dr Lalit Malhotra” was held at Khatri Sabha Bhawan, Mandi, to honour the life and legacy of internationally renowned physicist and pioneer of Thin Film Technology, Dr Lalit Malhotra, who passed away on June 17, 2025, in Gurugram.

The event was jointly organised by Mandipedia, Mere Apne and INTACH-Mandi Chapter. Friends, scholars, scientists and admirers from across the region gathered to pay tribute to the celebrated scientist who hailed from Mandi and was affectionately known as “Latu” in his childhood.

The seminar began with a two-minute silence. Anchor Neeraj Sharma shared a personal anecdote from his interview with Dr Malhotra, remembering him as a humble, brilliant and inspirational figure.

Dr Malhotra’s remarkable scientific journey was marked by prestigious recognitions, including the INSA-JSPS Fellowship (1982), the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (1984) and the Materials Research Society of India Medal (1995).

Vinod Behl, admin of Mandipedia, delivered an emotional remembrance in the Mandi dialect, highlighting Dr Malhotra’s love for his roots and his role in preserving Mandi’s heritage.

Prof Ajay Soni from IIT-Mandi recalled Dr Malhotra’s pivotal involvement in the institution’s early years as a visiting professor. He noted how his global experience significantly shaped IIT-Mandi’s academic vision.

Speakers also praised Dr Malhotra for founding India’s first Thin Film Lab at IIT Delhi, which paved the way for major advancements in semiconductors and LED technology. In a spiritual tribute, Nitya Darshi Vaidya described Dr Malhotra as a sage who served silently through science

The event concluded with heartfelt gratitude from Dr. Malhotra’s son, Rahul Malhotra, who thanked everyone for honouring his father’s extraordinary legacy.
