Tributes paid to 190 cops martyred in past year

A solemn ceremony was held at the Police Lines in Nahan today to mark National Police Commemoration Day in the honour of fellow personnel who had laid down their lives in the line of duty. Homage was paid to 190 police, paramilitary and central security force personnel, who were martyred across the country over the past year. No police official from Himachal Pradesh were among the martyrs this year.

SP, Sirmaur, Nishchint Singh Negi led the ceremony and highlighted the significance of the day, which is observed every year on October 21 to pay tribute to the courage and dedication of India’s police forces. He recalled that the observance of the day traces its origin to October 21, 1959, when 10 Indian police personnel were ambushed and killed by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh.

The Directors General and Inspectors General of Police Conference formally instituted the day in 1960 in the memory of those 10 martyrs and to recognise the unflinching commitment of police personnel, who continue to safeguard the nation.

At Nahan, the Sirmaur Police read out the names of all 190 martyrs and observed a two-minute silence to pay their respects. The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of the bravery, discipline and sacrifice of police personnel, who risk their lives everyday to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
