Chamba District and Sessions-cum-Special Judge Jaswant Singh on Saturday convicted two individuals in separate cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused, Roop Singh and Jeet Singh, were both sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 1,00,000 each. In case of non-payment of the fine, they will have to undergo an additional one-year simple imprisonment.

Deputy District Attorney Anil Sharma, who prosecuted both the cases, said in the first case a police team was patrolling near Koti bridge on March 4, 2023, when they spotted Roop Singh carrying a backpack. On seeing the police, he panicked and attempted to flee, discarding his bag. The police apprehended him and searched the abandoned bag, discovering a knotted pink carry bag inside. Further inspection revealed another white bag containing a black substance which was identified as charas. The contraband weighed 1.109 kg.

A case was registered against Roop Singh, and after due legal proceedings, he was convicted and sentenced under Section 20 of the NDPS Act.
