Local people yesterday rescued two residents of Mud village in the Spiti valley of Lahaul and Spiti district, who were trapped under an avalanche. According to information, the villagers were working to restore water supply to the village, which was disrupted for the past few days. The residents, led by the numberdar Chewang, set out to the source of water to restore the supply to their village, only to find that an avalanche had swept away their four tanks.
The villagers worked tirelessly to find a new water source. After a lot of effort, they located a fresh source of water at a nearby spring but an avalanche suddenly hit the area. Two villagers were trapped under the heaps of snow for several minutes, causing panic among fellow residents. It took nearly 10 to 15 minutes to locate and rescue the two persons. By the grace of God, both were safe and unharmed, said Chewang.
However, the villagers continued with their mission and successfully brought water to the village.
