Una, July 22
The Una district administration today distributed 1,100 saplings of citrus fruit varieties to children and community-based organisations in an effort to increase the green cover of the district.
Before distributing the saplings, Deputy Commissioner Jatin Lal said the event was a part of the ongoing ‘Van Mahotsav’ monsoon campaign, which was a collaborative effort between the Una District Red Cross Society, the administration and the Una Forest Division.
It was everyone’s duty to ensure that the future generations inherit a clean environment, for which vegetation played a crucial role, he added.
The reckless cutting of trees and the reduction of the forest cover had triggered a number of environmental challenges, including global warming and soil erosion, which in turn were responsible for natural disasters, Lal said.
He added that while planting trees was important, it was even more imperative to protect and care for them.
The DC and ADC Mahender Pal Gurjar planted a sapling each on the premises of the district Mini Secretariat.
Divisional Forest Officer Sushil Kumar Rana and Una District Red Cross Society secretary Sanjay Sankhyan were among those present at the event. After the event, the DC served as the chief guest at a plantation campaign at Government Senior Secondary School, Santoshgarh, organised by the local Yuva Mandal. Yuva Mandal member Ashwani Saini said the organisation had set a target to plant 1,000 saplings during the monsoon.
