Athawale, while talking to newsmen here, said that Rahul Gandhi speaks about the lack of democracy in India while on his trips to western countries. If there is no democracy in India, how could the Congress get 99 seats in Lok Sabha and Rahul Gandhi become the Leader of the Opposition. Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in democracy and it has strengthened under him.

About the violence in Shimla against the unauthorised mosque and the subsequent lathi charge by police in which many people were injured, the union minister said that the Chief Minister of Himachal should himself have gone there and visited the spot to defuse the situation and maintain communal harmony. The Himachal government has mishandled the situation, he alleged.

Later, Athawale addressed the Asia Pacific Conference on the subject of building global consensus to reduce inequality through cooperative economic structure, that started today in McLeodganj. He said the cooperative sector would have to be promoted to strengthen the economy of farmers. Farmers will have to promote cooperative farming and horticulture. If the farmers of the country are empowered, the country will be able to progress. The conference was organised by the Confederation of NGOs of Rural India.

He said that the Modi government had started many schemes for farmers. Increasing the MSP was also being discussed. The Central Government had framed a law, but farmers opposed it and the law had to be withdrawn after a year.
