Urgent safety concerns on Chowari-Jot-Chamba road

The Chowari-Chamba via Jot Road, a lifeline for Chamba district, continues to pose safety risks, with critical stretches requiring urgent improvement. This route, the shortest link connecting Chamba, Bharmour and Tissa to Kangra district, faces significant challenges, particularly at a perilously narrow 40-metre stretch near Neharnala, 9 km from Jot. This segment, which accommodates only one vehicle at a time, lacks essential safety measures, making it hazardous for commuters.

The road, heavily relied upon by daily commuters, long-route buses, and tourists, becomes even busier during major events like the Manimahesh Yatra and the Minjar Fair. Residents, including Ankit Verma, Abhishek Thakur, and Vijay Sharma, have expressed concerns about the risks posed by the narrow stretch. “Even a minor mistake by a driver on this winding hill road can result in a fatal accident,” said Abhishek Thakur.

Locals suggest constructing a retaining wall to enhance safety, as widening the road could destabilize precariously stacked boulders along the hillside. They emphasized that the increasing vehicular traffic and accidents highlight the urgency of addressing the issue.

In response, Narinder Chaudhary, Executive Engineer of Chowari, stated that efforts are underway to widen and improve the Chamba-Jot road. Funds have been allocated to install safety measures on certain sections, with work expected to commence soon.

Residents continue to urge authorities to prioritise traveller safety, stressing the importance of this vital route for thousands of daily commuters. They believe immediate intervention is essential to prevent accidents and ensure safe travel.
