“The ill-fated vehicle tumbled down about 100 feet and the driver was killed on the spot. The utility vehicle broke into two parts with the impact of the fall. The PWD has not cleared the road and declared it fit for plying vehicles,” said Paonta Sahib DSP Bir Bahadur.

He said that Chandermohan had gone to drop some articles for a marriage at Bambhal village last evening and the mishap took place when he was returning. The body was recovered about 100 feet below the steep hill.

The narrow bumpy road has no parapets, and is very risky for vehicle driving, especially during night. Loads of stones piled up along the roadside compounds the risk. “The 4.4-km road was constructed under the Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana at the cost of Rs 58.61 lakh and was completed during 2007-2008. It is unmetalled and has not been declared fit for plying vehicles,” said RK Pruthi, Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur.
