Residents of Nagrota Surian and Bassa gram panchayats in the Nagrota Surian development block of Jawali Assembly constituency in Kangra district have strongly protested against the sudden closure of two village link roads by the Railway Department by installing iron girders.

Connecting both panchayats, these link roads were being used by local residents for movement of light vehicles and also reaching the crematorium ground in Bassa gram panchayat. As per information, the panchayat representatives and villagers reached the spot when railway employees were installing iron girders to close these link roads and appealed to them to not close these roads being used by the residents of nearby villages, but they didn’t pay heed to their requests and closed the roads.

The villagers lamented that last month too, the Railway Department had closed the level crossing road near Meenu khud at Katholi village, affecting the road connectivity of 10 surrounding villages. Following protests by the villagers, these roads were restored for the movement of light vehicles.

These are railway crossing link roads were used by the Bassa gram panchayat as ‘ambulance roads’. Bassa gram panchayat chief Surekha Devi said, “The closure of link roads was unfair and troublesome as shifting patients during emergencies in light vehicles is not possible now.”

The residents have appealed to the authorities to intervene and restore the connectivity.

Despite several attempts, Divisional Railway Manager (Ferozepur) Sanjay Sahu could not be contacted for a comment.
