Nurpur, August 4
The gabion wall raised to protect Chakki railway bridge from soil erosion due to flash floods at Dhangu Peer in Indora Assembly constituency in Kangra district was today washed away due to strong flow of flood water in the Chakki rivulet.
The railway department had constructed this wall on the banks of Chakki rivulet over the concrete slabs laid alongside the riverbank.
After washing away of the gabion wall, the concrete slabs laid on the rivulet bank were dislocated, posing threat of soil erosion beneath the railway bridge on which a large number of trains cross daily in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Jammu. After washing away of gabion wall and dislocating of concrete slabs in the Chakkii rivulet, a threat is looming large to the railway bridge.
The technical teams and senior officials of the railway department from Pathankot have been visiting the spot to examine the situation for the past two days. A railway official said that the department was already taken proactive steps to save the bridge from soil erosion but heavy flash floods have washed away the gabion wall constructed with hard stones knitted with iron wires. He said all steps would be taken to protect the railway bridge.
