Set up for monitoring the water quality of the Ghaggar, the executive committee of the NGT, led by Justice Pritam Pal, today visited Parwanoo and reviewed the progress of the district-level task force.

He lauded the team for bringing about appreciable changes in the water quality of the Kaushalya and Sukhna Nullah, which were major eyesores earlier.

IPH officials told to float tenders for STP

  • Since the flow of untreated sewage into the Sukhna Nullah had deteriorated its water quality, the IPH Department had been directed by the NGT to set up STPs in the town.

Officials of various departments, including Deputy Commissioner KC Chaman, Xen, Irrigation and Public Health Department (IPH), Sumit Sood, Xen, HIMUDA, Medical Superintendent of the ESIC hospital, DFO, BDO, executive officer of the Parwanoo Municipal Committee, assistant engineer, State Pollution Control Board, Atul Parmar and president of the Parwanoo Industries Association were also present.

Since the inflow of untreated sewage into the nullah had deteriorated its water quality, the IPH Department had been directed by the NGT to set up sewage treatment plants (STPs) in the town.

IPH officials said two STPs were being set up in the town. They informed the committee members about the operational status of the existing STP.

The NGT committee directed the officials to float tenders in December and ensure its time-bound installation. The IPH officials said there was no contamination in the groundwater at Parwanoo, allaying the fear that industrial units were letting out untreated water on the sly in the ground.

On the NGT orders, the IPH Department has installed the water quality monitoring online system at Kaushalya, whose real-time monitoring is being done by the Central Pollution Control Board and the State Pollution Control Board. A radar has also been installed at the site, which helps the officials check contamination and take immediate remedial measures.

SPCB officials said the quality of water in the Sukhna Nullah had improved vis-a-vis 2018 as several measures like cleanliness drives, installation of an STP and periodic monitoring of pollution causing units were undertaken.
