‘Water supplied to Malyana, Sangti contaminated’
Shimla, August 20
Alleging that residents of Malyana and Sangti localities in the town were getting contaminated drinking water supply, the Malyana unit of the Shimla Nagrik Sabha has asked the Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) to take steps to improve the water quality.
The Sabha said if the company failed to clean water storage tanks in two days, the residents will protest outside its office. Vivek Kashyap, convener, Shimla Nagrik Sabha, Malyana unit, said there were around 500 houses in these areas and these were getting contaminated water every day.
“On one hand, the Municipal Corporation appeals to people to maintain cleanliness, on the other hand they are being supplied with contaminated water,” he said.
He alleged the drinking water being supplied to the households was mixed with sewage. “When the people are paying for garbage collection, property tax and water charges in time, it is our right to get clean drinking water,” he added.
He said a delegation of the Sabha will soon meet the Municipal Corporation officials on the issue. The Sabha has also warned the SJPNL and Shimla Municipal Corporation officials of launching a mass movement if the issue was not resolved at the earliest.
