MUST a 77-year-old, having served the state in various capacities, go through a series of horrors to merely renew his driving licence? When I visited the ‘Sugam’ centre at the DC office for the purpose, the gate at the Lower Bazar side was locked. I had to climb about 100 m, then climb down nearly 200 stairs to reach the other side of the gate. A walk of another 100 m and more stairs brought me to the ‘Sugam’ office, where I was told to go to the first floor! I was then forced to return to the entry point at the Mall level. I gave up and sat down on the stairs — and, to rub salt in the wound, a monkey snatched my spectacles and vanished. All this because the gate at the Lower Bazar side was locked. I urge the DC to ensure this gate is open during office hours — and do something about the monkeys, too. Vijay Chopra, Sanjauli, Shimla
