In the wake of the recent natural disaster that struck the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti, numerous tourists and heavy/light vehicle drivers found themselves stranded in the Sissu region due to blocked roads and disrupted connectivity. Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kiran Bhadana, visited the Sissu area today to personally acknowledge and appreciate the commendable efforts made by local organisations — Mooling Mahila Mandal, Yuvak Mandal, Gondhla Vyapar Mandal and the Ghepan Temple Committee.

“These community efforts are not only praiseworthy but also exemplify the highest ideals of humanity in action during times of adversity,” said Bhadana during her visit. “While the government and administration are committed to relief and rehabilitation during disasters, the active participation of civil society and local groups significantly enhances the effectiveness of these efforts.”

For several days, these community organisations have been providing free breakfast, lunch and dinner to the stranded individuals — all without any expectations in return. This act of service has been driven purely by compassion, hospitality, and a deep sense of responsibility towards fellow human beings.

DC Bhadana emphasised that such community-led initiatives are instrumental in strengthening disaster management systems and accelerating administrative responses. “At a time when tourists from outside the region were facing uncertainty and discomfort, the local community in Sissu stepped in, treating them as honoured guests and ensuring no one slept on an empty stomach,” she remarked.

She further added that the people of Lahaul-Spiti have always demonstrated exceptional unity in the face of crises. “Despite harsh weather and remote geography, the district has preserved a strong tradition of humanitarian values. The selfless service rendered by these local groups proves that collective efforts can overcome even the most daunting challenges.”

The Deputy Commissioner also highlighted the relentless efforts of the DDMA in carrying out rescue and road restoration operations at a war footing, ensuring the safe movement of stranded travellers. She noted that the role played by local organisations during the crisis underscores the critical importance of community participation in any disaster response mechanism.

“The combined efforts of the administration and the community offer a comprehensive solution to disaster management. The work done by these groups in Sissu will be remembered as a model for future disaster response and community cooperation,” she stated.

During her visit, DC Bhadana also held direct interactions with local residents to listen to their problems and assess immediate needs. She assured them of continued support from the district administration and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing all possible assistance.

Also present during the visit were Deputy Superintendent of Police Rashmi Sharma, Block Development Officer Dr Vivek Guleria, and other officials.

The response from the Sissu community serves not only as a beacon of hope in difficult times but also as a shining example of what unified action between society and administration can achieve. The resilience and compassion displayed here will undoubtedly inspire others across thes state and beyond.
