The District Sessions Court has sentenced Gurmeshi Devi, a habitual drug offender from Chhanni village under Damtal police station, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined her Rs 1 lakh for drug peddling.
According to Nurpur SP Ashok Ratan, the convict was arrested on October 12, 2019, with 5.61 grams of heroin (chitta). After investigation, a chargesheet was filed on June 8, 2020, leading to her conviction on February 24, 2025.
Gurmeshi Devi has been repeatedly arrested for drug-related offenses over the past five years. The police have declared her a habitual offender under the NDPS Act. While convicted in one case, she is still facing trial in five more cases.
One NDPS case against her was registered at Nurpur police station in January 2020. Three more cases were filed at Damtal police station in May 2021, April 2023 and December 2023. Another case was registered at Dharamshala police station in March 2023.
SP Ratan said the Nurpur police were actively working to dismantle the interstate drug network and ensure strict legal action against offenders. The department is focused on securing convictions to curb drug trafficking in the district.
