The construction of a Bailey bridge on the Pagal Nullah site is set to commence soon giving hope of uninterrupted connectivity on the Manali-Leh highway. Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana, who has been actively advocating for a permanent solution to the recurring transportation challenges in the region, made the announcement.
The Pagal Nullah, located on the Manali-Leh National Highway in Lahaul and Spiti district, has long been a critical choke point, especially during the monsoon season when sudden water flow disrupts traffic and isolates the remote areas of Lahaul and Spiti. Despite repeated temporary fixes, the problem has persisted, prompting growing concern among locals, travellers and defence personnel, who rely on this lifeline for transportation.
When asked, Anuradha told The Tribune that the Bailey bridge construction on Pagal Nullah would begin soon. “The Bailey bridge construction will ensure safe and smooth passage in the area,” she added. However, she emphasised that this was only a temporary solution. A permanent and technically sound structure was needed to address the issue once and for all.
“For long-term stability and uninterrupted transport on the highway, we have requested the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to construct a flyover-type permanent bridge at the Pagal Nullah. I’m glad to share that the BRO is actively working on the proposal,” she added.
The Manali-Leh highway is not only a vital artery for civilian movement but also holds military and logistic importance, making uninterrupted connectivity the top priority.
Locals have urged the authorities concerned to fast-track the permanent flyover plan. Many residents say that frequent closures due to flooding and landslides at the Pagal Nullah severely impact tourism, local livelihoods and emergency services.
