Work on Nadaun’s medical college nearing completion

The construction of the campus of Dr Radhakrishanan Government Medical College and Hospital at Thai village in the Nadaun constituency of Hamirpur district is nearing completion. The construction company has started the finishing work of the building and has installed a signboard. The cost of the project has increased to Rs 417 crore.

The UPA government led by the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had sanctioned the college in 2014 with a budget of Rs 186 crore on the request of Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. After becoming Chief Minister, Sukhu had approved over Rs 150 crore for the project so that it could be completed in the stipulated time.

Politicians have been trying to take the credit for the establishment of the college. The foundation stone of the building was laid by JP Nadda in the presence of the then Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur and the then local MP Anurag Thakur but the people of the area well understand that the project was Sukhu’’s initiative. The pace of the construction work picked up only after Sukhu won the Nadaun seat and became Chief Minister.

Meanwhile, the estimated cost of the project has increased from Rs 186 crore to Rs 417 crore as the Chief Minister wanted this hospital to have state-of-the-art buildings and other infrastructure. The Chief Minister had also announced to establish a cancer research institute and a nursing college here to enable the hospital a complete health destination with super specialties.

Dr Ramesh Bharti, Principal of the college, said that the construction of the college campus was nearing completion. It was expected that the next academic session could be started on the new campus. He added that the process to procure furniture for the academic and hospital blocks would be started soon.
