Workshop on High Elevation Plant Adaptation commences
A four-day international workshop ‘High Elevation Plant Adaptation in a Changing Climate’ (HEPACC) began on the premises of the CSIR-Institute of Himalayan Bio-resource Technology (CSIR-IHBT), Palampur today.
The workshop is being held under the aegis of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).
Director CSIR-IHBT, Dr Sudesh Kumar Yadav, while welcoming the participants apprised them about the floral surveys and ecological sampling being carried out by the institute in the Himalayan region. He highlighted the institute’s initiatives particularly for the setting up a Centre for High Altitude Biology at Lahaul in the snow-bound valley of Himachal Pradesh and the long-term monitoring being carried out by the institute regularly.
Dr Christian Korner, University of Basel, Switzerland, delivered the first keynote address. He dwelled upon the high mountain ecosystems and how plants survive there. He further highlighted the role of field studies and the importance of Himalaya for climate change studies.
The EMBO workshop is a congregation of global experts and young researchers deliberating on the critical aspects of plant adaptation to the changing environment.
The workshop features a range of activities, including scientific talks and poster presentations under eight sessions clubbed into four themes covering topics on plant adaptation, phytochemistry, ecosystem monitoring and climate change impacts on distribution of species
