World Bank specialist interacts with IIIT students on global telecommunications

World Bank Senior Digital Development Specialist Rajendra Singh last night interacted with students of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) on global telecommunications as part of the ‘Una Talks’ series started by the institute. Experts from global industrial giants, besides eminent scientists are invited to talk on the latest technologies and innovations, in the series.

Rajendra Singh, who has an experience 42 years in the digital development sector, is presently the Digital Development Specialist at the World Bank in Washington DC, a post which he has held for the past 17 years. He is acclaimed for making remarkable contributions to global telecommunications and played a key role in implementing the World Bank funded digital development projects worldwide in more than 50 countries, including conflict affected countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, West Bank and Myanmar.

Ravi Sharma, Chairperson, the IIIT Una Board of Governors, said Rajendera Singh’s insightful talk on 5G technology had ignited a wave of inspiration among students. He said, “Rajendra Singh’s expertise and vision are instrumental in shaping the mindset towards innovation and technology-driven solutions that will contribute significantly towards building a more robust and inclusive society.”

Sharma said before his tenure at the World Bank, Rajendra Singh held key positions such as Secretary, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), and head, Mobile Network Division, TRAI, for seven years.

Prior to that, he spent 18 years with the Indian Railways in various capacities, including Director of Telecommunications. Additionally, he had gained brief experience of around two years with the Uttar Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation (UPTRON) and Bharat Electronics, a Ministry of Defence undertaking.

Prof Binod Kumar Kanaujia, Officiating Director, IIIT Una, thanked Rajendra Singh for his address at the talk session. He expressed satisfaction that the session had been successful in addressing myths and misconceptions among students regarding the telecommunication industry and would ensure narrowing the gap between academia and industry since telecommunication contributes to the overall resilience, stability and progress of society in the digital age.
