Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsTo enhance passenger safety and bolster security measures on trains, the Indian Railways has so far installed CCTV cameras in 11,535 coaches, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed the Parliament on Wednesday.
Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Vaishnaw said that the Centre has embarked on a plan to install CCTV cameras in approximately 74,000 coaches and 15,000 locomotives across the railway network. The initiative is aimed at deterring criminal activity, aiding investigations, and providing a safer travel environment for passengers.
“As part of the project, each coach will be fitted with four CCTV cameras—two at each entrance—while locomotives will have six cameras, covering the front, rear, sides, and the driver’s cabs. Two microphones will also be installed in the locomotive cabins,” Vaishnaw stated in a written reply.
The minister clarified that passenger privacy will not be compromised, as cameras are being installed only in common areas near the doors and not in private compartments or washrooms. He added that all cameras will comply with the latest RDSO specifications and be STQC-certified, ensuring high-quality video recording even in trains moving at speeds exceeding 100 kmph.
While the final cost of the initiative is yet to be determined, Vaishnaw said the expenditure will be assessed after all related works are finalized.
He also indicated that real-time monitoring and AI-based surveillance capabilities are being considered for future upgrades.
