Gallantry award winner Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot Air Marshal RN Bhardawaj, who was among those who attacked Pakistani army tanks near Chammb during the 1971 war, died at his residence in Noida. He was 89.

He was awarded the country’s second highest war-time gallantry medal, the Mahavir Chakra. As a young Squadron Leader, he was posted in Pathankot with the 20 Squadron and was part of many missions over Pakistan. The citation of his MVC says on December 10, 1971, he led a close support mission to the Chhamb area.
