3 Indians dead, 5 missing as boat capsizes off Mozambique coast

At least three Indian nationals died and five others went missing after a boat carrying 14 crew members capsized off the Beira port in Mozambique, the Indian High Commission in Maputo said on Saturday.

The incident occurred during what officials described as a routine transfer of crew members to a tanker anchored off the port.

The boat overturned suddenly, though the exact cause of the mishap remains unclear. Authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the accident.

The Indian Mission in Mozambique said search and rescue operations are underway, with coordination between Indian and local authorities. “A Consular Officer from the mission is in Beira and has visited the Indian national who survived the unfortunate boat mishap and is receiving medical attention in hospital,” the High Commission said.

So far, five Indians have been rescued, while three have lost their lives, and five remain unaccounted for.

“We convey our heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives, including of three Indian nationals. The mission is in contact with the families of those who have lost their lives and is extending all possible assistance to them,” the statement said.
