Upping the ante against the Narendra Modi government, the Congress on Thursday said BJP MP Anurag Thakur had “proved” Rahul Gandhi’s claim that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were fought on the basis of a “fake voter list”.

The party accused PM Modi of ascending to the top post through a “booster dose of fake voters” from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, and demanded that the 2024 results be nullified. It also called for the dissolution of Parliament and fresh elections.

Addressing mediapersons, Congress leader Pawan Khera said while Thakur’s comments were aimed at the Opposition, they inadvertently exposed the Election Commission. The party sought the electronic voter list for the Varanasi constituency, which PM Modi won in 2024, alleging the victory was “secured through fake voters”.

Khera claimed that on counting day Modi trailed for half the day before taking the lead, which he attributed to irregularities. Citing the case of a voter, Raj Kamal Das, allegedly listed as the father of 45 people, he said: “For 1,050 minutes, there was no clarity in counting, then suddenly Modi won by 1 lakh votes.”

Calling Thakur’s remarks a “smoking gun”, Khera said, “The figures presented by Thakur are evidence of crime. We want him to give us this evidence and all figures, since the crime has now been proved. You have shown that the BJP is hand in glove with the EC.”

Khera noted that Thakur had presented data from six Lok Sabha constituencies, including Rae Bareli, Amethi, Diamond Harbour and Kurnool, to prove irregularities. “Thanks to Thakur for finally showing interest in fake voter lists. Until now, we were trolled and served notices for raising this,” he said.
