New Delhi, August 9
The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking to postpone the NEET-PG, scheduled to be held on August 11, saying that it cannot put the careers of so many candidates in jeopardy for five students.
“As a matter of principle, we will not reschedule the exam. There are two lakh students and four lakh parents who will weep over the weekend if we postpone it. We cannot put the careers of so many candidates in jeopardy. We do not know who is behind these petitions,” a Bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud told senior counsel Sanjay Hegde, who represented the petitioners.
The petitioners contended that candidates had been allocated cities that were highly inconvenient for them to reach.
Hegde submitted that rescheduling the NEET-PG was needed as there was one exam in the morning and another in the afternoon.
“How can we postpone such an exam? Mr Sanjay Hegde, nowadays people just come asking to postpone the exam.
It’s not a perfect world. We are not academic experts,” said the Bench, which also included Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Misra. “Let there be some certainty...let there be certainty for the medical students at least now,” it said. Initially scheduled for June 23, the NEET-PG was postponed by the Union Health Ministry as a “precautionary measure” in the wake of alleged irregularities in certain competitive exams. — TNS
