BJP MLAs meet Nadda amid suspense over Delhi CM pick
Amid ongoing speculation over who will be the next Chief Minister of Delhi, several newly elected MLAs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) met party president JP Nadda on Tuesday at Parliament.
The BJP described the meeting as a courtesy call following the party's impressive victory in the recently concluded Delhi Assembly elections.
The BJP MLAs in attendance included Satish Upadhyay (Malviya Nagar), Kapil Mishra (Karawal Nagar), Anil Sharma (RK Puram), Shikha Roy (Greater Kailash), Arvinder Singh Lovely (Gandhi Nagar), Vijendra Gupta (Rohini), Ajay Mahawar (Ghonda), Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh), Kulwant Rana (Rithala), and Anil Goyal (Krishna Nagar).
Following the meeting, the MLAs stated that no discussions were held regarding the legislature party meeting or potential chief ministerial candidates. They emphasised that the visit was long overdue, given the party's overwhelming mandate over AAP, and was arranged at Nadda's parliamentary office.
Insiders suggest that the BJP legislature party is expected to convene after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his diplomatic trips to France and the US.
The selection of a new Chief Minister has become a challenge for the BJP, as several prominent party figures are considered viable candidates. While some believe the party may opt for a woman legislator, others suggest a Purvanchali candidate could be the front-runner for the top post.
Among the newly elected MLAs, the names of Parvesh Verma, who defeated Kejriwal from the New Delhi seat, former Delhi BJP presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay have emerged as potential contenders for the Chief Minister's position.
A section of party leaders emphasised on Monday that the new Chief Minister should be chosen from the elected BJP MLAs, rather than MPs, in order to respect the mandate given by the people of Delhi.
