The byelections for as many as 12 Rajya Sabha seats across nine states, including one in Haryana, will be held on September 3. The result will be declared the same day, the Election Commission said. A notification for the elections will be issued on August 14 and the last date for filing papers is August 21, it said.
Of the 12 seats, 10 fell vacant after the respective members won the Lok Sabha elections. The prominent among them are Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Sarbananda Sonowal and Deepender Hooda.
Other members who won the Lok Sabha elections are BJP’s Kamakhya Prasad Tasa (Assam), RJD leader Misa Bharti and BJP MP Vivek Thakur (Bihar), BJP’s Udayanraje Bhosale (Maharashtra), Congress’ KC Venugopal (Rajasthan) and BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb (Tripura).
Telangana will vote for one seat that fell vacant when former BRS member K Keshava Rao resigned on July 5 to rejoin the Congress. In Odisha, the seat fell vacant when former BJD member Mamata Mohanta resigned from the party on July 31 to join the BJP.
