Cabinet Committee on Security meeting under way, India mulls major steps post Pahalgam terror attack
A day after four LeT terrorists killed 26 tourists in a South Kashmir meadow in cold blood, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is convening a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security at his 7 Lok Kalyan Marg residence.
A major and calibrated response to the attacks is expected to be formalised at the meeting. The response could be both military and diplomatic.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has already said publicly on Wednesday that India will give a befitting response to the Pahalgam attack in the near future.
Post the Pulwama attack in 2019, India had recalled its ambassador from Pakistan. Pakistan had also recalled its high commissioner with Charge d'Affaires posted in the Pakistan high commission in Delhi.
India currently has a high commission in Islamabad with diplomatic relations already curtailed post Pulwama attack in which Jaish-e-Muhammad had claimed responsibility for killing over 40 Indian para military personnel. India has a deputy high commissioner in Islamabad.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is attending the CCS meeting after returning from Srinagar on Wednesday.
The CCS consists of PM Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, HM Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (who is on her way back home after cutting short the US and Peru visit) and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
NSA Ajit Doval, service chiefs and Chief of Defence Staff are also learnt to be attending the meeting of the apex cabinet committee responsible for national security.
