New Delhi, February 27

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar again reiterated that the Justin Trudeau government gave very little help when Indian diplomats were harassed in Canada. It was this lack of sensitivity on part of Ottawa that prompted India to suspend issuance of visas in Canada, he said while addressing an event on Monday evening.

“We had to suspend issuance of visas in Canada because our diplomats were not safe going to work. Our diplomats were repeatedly threatened. They were intimidated in many ways and we got very little comfort from the Canadian system,” he said. Jaishankar also said the government was expecting action from the American and British governments against incidents of violence at Indian missions in San Francisco and New York. “We expect the culprits in the attack on our consulate in San Francisco to be brought to book, we expect action against people who stormed into our High Commission in London, and we expect action against people who threatened our diplomats (in Canada),” he said.
