Centre accepts 3 amendments to Waqf Amendment Bill to ‘safeguard Muslim welfare’
The Centre has accepted three amendments to the Waqf Amendment Bill, suggested by its key ally, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). These amendments, incorporated into the bill presented in Lok Sabha by Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, aim to ensure the “welfare of Muslims”.
One crucial amendment ensures the prospective application of “Waqf by User” clause, which means that existing Waqf properties registered under this provision will remain protected, even without a Waqf deed.
It also suggested that state Waqf authorities should be strengthened, ensuring a more robust and fair resolution process. In this regard, TDP suggested replacing the district collector with a designated officer above the collector’s rank to handle disputes over wrongful claims by Waqf Boards.
TDP has also proposed an amendment to extend the timeline for uploading Waqf property documents on the central portal. Originally, the bill required registration within six months, but recognising practical challenges, the NDA alliance pushed for an extension.
The Joint Committee of Parliament accepted this proposal, allowing Waqf Tribunal to grant extensions in select cases where valid reasons for delay exist.
This, sources informed, will ensure that all Waqf properties have sufficient time for proper registration.
